The "Dutch-German pumping station" regulates the water drainage of approximately 6,500 hectares of Dutch and 10,000 hectares of German polder land. Without drainage, a large part of this area would be frequently flooded. The pumping station is also part of the main flood defense and protects the hinterland against high water in the Waal.
The Dutch-German pumping station, built in 1932 according to a design by architect Granpé Molière, was thoroughly renovated between 1997 and 1999.
The cultural-historical value of the building, which is on the municipal monument list, was fully preserved during the renovation. The technical installation has been completely renewed and modernized during the renovation. The free discharge and drainage are now controlled automatically.
During the renovation, the historic ecological connection between Waal and the polder was also restored.
The renovation of the pumping station was realized with the support of the European Union, the Country of North Rhine-Westphalia, the province of Gelderland and De Gelderse Poort.
