Unbelievable with the small photos!

The Elfstedenmonument Monument It was designed and realized by the artists Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart on the Kanter Landbrücke over the Murk River. This is the last bridge on the Elfstedenroute, which the skaters pass for the last few kilometers to the finish in Leeuwarden.

The bridge will be entirely covered with thousands of handmade ceramic tiles, each with blue glazed portraits of skaters who have ever followed the Elfstedentocht. In the last century, 16 Elfstedentochten were held, in which thousands of riders managed to finish the 200 km race.

Eleven Cities Monument unveiled

In the summer of 2001, after several years of preparation, the first part of the Eleven Steden monument was unveiled. Thousands of pictures of Elfstedenriders have been sent for this purpose. Both old photos from the beginning of the last century of skaters who took part in the first tour in 1909, as well as pictures from the last trip in 1997. A total of over 7000 eleven riders have been pictured on the bridge so far. Since the unveiling, many thousands of people from home and abroad have visited the memorial, including Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima.
