The Retiro Park Lake, also known as the Estanque Grande del Buen Retiro, is one of the most iconic landmarks in Madrid. This artificial lake was built between 1634 and 1636 by the architect Cristóbal de Aguilera. Originally, it was part of the gardens of the Buen Retiro Palace and was used for water shows, such as mock naval battles and boat rides for royalty.
