The lake was used as a fish pond until the Mannheim – Stuttgart high-speed line was built. The Freudenstein Tunnel runs northeast of the lake through the mountain. The lake was drained on June 22nd, 2009, and about 10 days later it was empty, much faster than expected. Between 50,000 and 60,000 fish were recovered. The digested sludge then dried out and mineralized. Experts hope that the lowering will result in a long-term improvement in the ecological situation. It is now known as a "heavenly pond", i.e. it gets its water primarily from precipitation. Regular fishing and drainage as it used to be no longer takes place. Since then there has not been as much water in the lake as before.

Like so many other lakes in the Kraichgau, the old Bernhardsweiher near Oberderdingen also has an ancient history. It was created in the 13th century by the monks of the monastery in Herrenalb, who managed parts of their property from nearby Oberderdingen. So it is not surprising that the Bernhardsweiher is named after Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the most important monks of the Cistercian order.

The lake was actually used as a fish pond until the late 20th century, but this changed with the construction of the Mannheim-Stuttgart high-speed railway line. Since the many small watercourses and springs that fed the Bernhardsweiher with water dried up, probably during the construction work, it has been known as the so-called “heavenly pond”. Heavenly ponds are still bodies of water that get their water exclusively from rainfall, and are fed by the sky itself, so to speak. However, because precipitation sometimes fails to materialize, it can happen that the Bernhardsweiher temporarily dries out.
