The memorial commemorates the crash of a German military plane near the Goldachhof shortly before the end of the First World War. Reserve lieutenant Georg Joseph Kuhner (born October 10, 1892) from Hochspeyer and Sergeant Ulrich Georg Frey (born July 5, 1890) from Burgau were killed in the accident.

The manager of the Goldachhof at the time recorded the events for the Randlkofer family's guest book. The design for the Marterl came from the architect Karl Söldner, and it was consecrated by the Ismaning priest on September 21, 1919.
