German-German border crossing at the transit route Berlin-Hamburg until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989

Stolpe was the last border crossing that was put into operation shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1981/82, the GDR built a motorway (today: A111) to relieve the F5 (or B5) trunk road, which was no longer able to meet the demands of increasing travel between West Berlin and Hamburg. The "Stolpe border crossing point" opened in 1982 was initially only used for West Berlin transit traffic to Scandinavia. Entry into the GDR, even for pedestrians, was possible via Stolpe thanks to a shuttle bus service to the border. Until the end of 1987, traffic in the direction of Hamburg passed through the old Staaken border crossing on Heerstrasse in Spandau.
