    Mountain biking

    This abbey was home to Cistercian monks for more than 300 years until the Protestant Reformation of 1560 ended the spiritual use of the abbey. It is thought the abbey kept the Book of Deer in its library. This gospel book was written around 900 AD.

    Deer Abbey is just of the Formartine and Buchan way and well worth stopping by. Maintained by Historic Scotland and free entry, the ruins are interesting to explore. Is it said this was once the home of the book of deer, the oldest know Gaelic writing.
