Gellep-Stratum is the south-eastern part of Krefeld. The population is 2,830 (as of December 31, 2008). Until it was incorporated into the city of Krefeld in 1929, Gellep-Stratum was a municipality in the district of Krefeld. (...)In the south-east of what is now Krefeld there are two old core settlements. The one closer to the Rhine is Gelduba/Gellep. Here, in the late 1st century AD, the Romans built the Gelduba Castle near a Ubian village. (...)West of Gelduba was another early medieval settlement, whose medieval successor is today's Stratum. Here, too, an early medieval burial ground was discovered and excavated by Albert Steeger, from whom around 200 graves are known to this day. As a special feature, there are cremation graves and burials aligned north-south that are unusual for the region. Parts of the associated settlement were excavated in the “Puppenburg” field in 1979/80.Reference and link to full article:
