These "grand caponiers" were positions that were aligned to one side and were often armed with a 75 mm cannon and 2 x 8 mm automatic rifles. The flat area in front of the caponiers was intended for the formation of so-called sortie points, which were to fight the enemy from there across the water. Sounds like the formation for a suicide mission. How nice that today you can be so peaceful by the water in this place.
The door is open and the caponier has the charm of "lost places".
The "Vestvolden" fortress wall was built at the end of the 19th century after the lost war against Prussia/Germany to protect the capital. Approximately 14 km long, the fortress was the largest construction project in Danish history before the construction of the bridge over the Great Belt. In the First World War, 50,000 soldiers served on the "West Wall". Fortunately, the kingdom was able to stay out of the war itself. Denmark's participation in the war consisted of trade with the conflicting parties, i.e. horses for the Germans and ham for the English... The development of military technology made Vestvolden pointless. The rampart was decommissioned in 1920, later placed under monument protection and was properly restored between 2006 and 2014 through a Relandia project. Today, the 14 km are a great, 100 m wide recreational area that runs through the capital region and has many corners that are worth a visit. vestvolden.dk
