"The pools in this nature reserve were created by the bombs that fell on the station in Hasselt and the surrounding area in April 1944. The Allies wanted to bomb the shunting station in preparation for D-Day (July 6, 1944). The purpose of the bombings was to prevent the supply of war weapons and material from the Germans.
These bombings caused the many craters in the landscape. A number of craters (110) have been cleared and are now full of life. The rare great crested newt is the main resident. Or how that terrible war has a nice ending through this small but beautiful nature reserve in the center of Hasselt."

Tommelen is a nature reserve that borders the marshalling yard and the large ring road around Hasselt. There are 110 pools in the area, which are home to the largest population of crested newts in Flanders.
