Tommelen is a nature reserve with 110 pools. It is located at the Hasselt marshalling yard. The pools were created as a result of bomb and grenade impacts on the station during WW2. Over the years, the largest part disappeared, but 110 have been preserved. This has created a small but very diverse and unique protected nature reserve, which houses the largest population of crested newts in Flanders.
The Tommelen nature reserve is also popularly referred to as 'the boemekóóëters'.
