Best Hikes to Iris Lake

Tips

  • In 1993, the Iris Lake in the Danube Park in the 22nd district of Donaustadt, which is lined with old poplar trees, was renaturalized. The extracted and oxygen-enriched groundwater now flows through it. Rushes, swan flowers, cattails and other plants form a biological sewage treatment plant (oxygen supply through natural processes). The treated water is finally discharged underground into the New Danube near the Brigittenau Bridge. Under certain water conditions (water level, current) the discharged water can be seen bubbling on the surface of the New Danube. The facility is managed by WGM, Vienna Water Management, on behalf of the City of Vienna. The Iris Bridge leads over the Iris Lake. In the immediate vicinity are the Korean Cultural Center, the mosaic "In the Café" by Helmut Leherb and the sculpture group "The Golden Calf" by Karl Anton Wolf.

  • Since the more than 25,000 square meter large iris lake had leaked, it was deepened in 1993. The banks were flattened and large swamp areas were planted. Plants such as rushes, sedges, bulrushes, frog spoons, swamp lilies, swan flowers, water mint and hedgehog cobs form a biological sewage treatment plant today. Furthermore, an old population of white poplars has been preserved.
