Built in the 1700s, the Ómassa smelter could no longer expand around the 1800s. Újmassa was designated as the “new smelter”, but there was no water here to operate. The confluence of the Garadna and Szinva streams at the upper end of the village of Hámor was the most suitable for this, where there was already a lake called Fel-tó, the water of which was considered medicinal. At the source of abundant water in the middle of the lake, the mud depth is 25-30 meters.
The creation of today's lake is named after Frigyes Fazola, who also took part in the construction of the dam, and in 1797 he gained skills in Banská Štiavnica. The first surveys of the construction of the dam were carried out as early as 1799, and then in 1809 the subject was again on the agenda. The toga was designed by chamber engineer Anton Seidl. The dam was made of clay rammed over a dolomite base between hedges. By the time the still new smelter was put into operation in Újmassa in 1813, most of the construction of the dam had been completed, and the final completion would be in 1815.
The Palace Hotel in Lillafüred was built between 1925 and 1929, which is why the Szinva was diverted mainly to make room for the Palace Hotel and not to be afraid of floods. With this diversion, the Szinva meets Garadna, which emerges from the dam of the lake, through the Lillafüred waterfall in Felső-Hámor, skipping the lake. Therefore, water supply has decreased.
In 1932–33, the clay core of the dam was re-paved with cement-laden stone, and in 1951, the lake was drained due to the installation of new bottom noise and repair of the dam. From the 1900s until World War II, boating was very popular, with good income. From 1956, the Miskolc Bath Company restarted boating in some parts of the lake. Prior to the construction of the Palace Hotel, the abundant trout stock was consumed by the locals and then tied to the Palace Hotel’s permit.
Since the water of the lake is 20-22 degrees to a depth of two meters, a beach-floating beach bath was built in 1932, which was later fixed to piles.
After 1945, for decades, boat and kayak races were also held on the lake every year.
