The keep of Porta Santa Maria has survived almost miraculously to the present day. A first demolition was decreed in 1872; it should have been replaced by an iron gate barrier. The city council had adopted the measure by a very large majority and some inhabitants of the course said they were willing to contribute financially, covering about one third of the expenses.
