In the year 1884 the first summer guests spent their holidays in Friedrichsbrunn and thus provided for the beginning of the tourist development of the place. Appointed as a health resort, two sanatoriums, three larger hotels and numerous smaller pensions were built before the First World War. In 1949, Friedrichsbrunn was designated a "climatic health resort and winter sports center" and until 1990 hosted some 20,000 holidaymakers and spa patients each year.
