The Hermitage belonged to Karlslust, the gardens of Karlsberg Castle near Homburg, which was destroyed in 1793. Hermitages or hermitages were picturesque elements in baroque gardens; they served as a retreat from court ceremonies. The small circular wooden building, of which only the foundation walls remain on a hill today, initially stood behind the castle itself and was moved due to lack of space.
