Castell y Gwynt

Recommended by 85 hikers out of 87

A bristling fortress of angled, spiky rock to the southwest of Glyder Fach’s main apex, Castell y Gwynt is an astonishing landmark on one of Britain’s greatest mountains. It is usually considered as a feature on Glyder Fach’s summit, rather than a separate peak, though the scramble to reach its top is spicier than the rocky clamber to the top of its parent mountain.

Glyder Fach's Castell y Gwynt – the Castle of the Winds – is an astonishing jumble of angled rock that puts one in mind of the Iron Throne. With Snowdon forming the backdrop, it makes for a glorious photograph on a clear day, while keen scramblers will revel in the short clamber to the top. It is usually considered as a part of Glyder Fach rather than as a separate summit in itself.

Loosely translated as "Castle of the Wind" I believe. Once here you will understand why it has that name, hard to keep on the path here if this is your first visit, so keep an eye out.

Castell y Gwynt is a top of Glyder Fach in Snowdonia, north-west Wales. It has the merit of being the only 3000 ft Welsh summit classed as only a Nuttall, hence it is not included in the Welsh 3000s. It has a prominence of 15.7 m, and was only included on the Nuttall's list after re-surveying in 2007.
