The heart of Barcelona; the point where its busiest streets, young people demonstrating and old people feeding pigeons converge. That's it, Plaça de Catalunya, one of the largest in the country.

With an area of five hectares, it is the kilometre zero of Catalonia. The starting point of La Rambla, Paseo de Gracia, Rambla de Cataluña, Avenida de Portal del Ángel, Calle Pelayo or the Ronda des Universitat and Sant Pere. Since when? Well, officially it is not a hundred years old. However, we have to go back to the 19th century to explain its origin properly. Barcelona was suffocating in its ancient walls. Outside, at one of the entrances to the city, there was a large esplanade that housed fair stalls, improvised cafés, shops and kiosks.

Plaça de Catalunya is the most central and largest of the squares in Barcelona. It is the connecting point between the old town and the Eixample. From here, important roads of the city start, such as La Rambla, Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya, the roundabouts of the University and Sant Pere and Carrer Pelai, as well as Avinguda del Portal de l'Àngel, the great commercial artery of the city, and old door of the walls.

Lively square in the middle of Barcelona. Starting point for many tours.
