Since the Reformation came to Heiligenhaus in 1560, the Hubertus Chapel on today's church square, built in the middle of the 15th century for the Catholic faithful and demolished in 1822/23, served alternately as a small place of worship for Reformed and Lutherans. With the growing number of members of both Protestant parishes, this building in need of repair was soon too small and the plans for their own church building were increasingly pushed forward by both congregations, separately from each other.

Around 1700, the Reformed Protestants built a preaching house for regular church services. They also built a school and a Protestant cemetery. Municipal boundaries were also drawn. But less than 100 years later, the sermon and school building were dilapidated. The foundation stone of the “Old Church” was laid in 1782.

Today the “Old Church” in the middle of Heiligenhaus, on the northern edge of the southern city area, on the main street (house number 206), is one of the city's landmarks.

The Reformed Church was probably completed in 1780 and the tower with the three bells was inaugurated in 1897. Thanks to a generous donation from the Friedrich Laubeck family, an organ made by master organ builder Friedrich Weigle accompanied the service from that year onwards, replacing the instrument from 1850 in the gallery.

The Lutheran community - significantly weaker financially than the Reformed community - inaugurated its own church with a tower on the main street (former pastorate) in 1789, but at the expense of a high debt burden. The Lutheran community could

Ultimately, the maintenance costs could no longer be afforded and so the dilapidated church was demolished in 1923 and never rebuilt. After the Reformed and Lutheran congregations were united in 1918 to form a Protestant congregation, the building now known as the “Old Church” served as a common place of worship.

In 1938 the church was renovated. In order to make space for the growing number of believers, the Weigle organ was moved from the gallery to the rectory next door and the pipes were aligned through the opening in the wall above the pulpit towards the church interior. In the anniversary year of 1980, the community received the organ with 16 registers, which was manufactured by the Orgelbau Schuke company in Potsdam and installed in the old gallery.
