Tips

  • In the Middle Ages, Grünenberg Castle was an impressive complex with mighty walls and towers. The barons of Langenstein founded the nearby St. Urban monastery in 1194 and built up an extensive rule over time. Their descendants, the Free von Grünenberg, influenced the entire region in the 13th and 14th centuries until they sold part of their property to the city of Bern.

The first excavations on the Schlossberg took place in 1949. Between 1992 and 1999 the remains of the wall were finally renovated and the important floor of the castle chapel made of St. Urban bricks was built over with a modern protective building.
