Since the southern part of Jutland belonged to Germany until 1920, it was important for the Germans to secure the important shipping connection between Haderslev and the northern German cities. That is why three coastal batteries were built at the beginning of the First World War. The only remaining battery in Årøsund was equipped with four 10.5 centimeter rapid fire guns with a range of 10.8 km. The central battery bunker contained a fire control center (with a range finder), a computer center, a radio room and a cover room for the gunners.
