Construction of the current church began during the reign of Merseburg Bishop Thilo von Trotha (1443-1514). He developed a brisk construction activity in the area of his places of activity, including in Lützen. Since the financial means were already tight at that time, the bishop had letters of indulgence sold to finance the building of the church in Lützen. This happened at the Naumburg and Leipzig fair, on the streets, in the surrounding villages and towns.
