The bathing water boasts very good microbiological water quality. Based on available long-term test data, the EU bathing area of Markranstädt on Lake Kulkwitz has been classified as having "Excellent Bathing Water Quality." Description of the bathing water: Lake Kulkwitz is located west of Leipzig, between Leipzig and Markranstädt on the B87 federal highway. The remaining pits of two former open-cast lignite mines were flooded in the mid-1960s and declared a local recreation area in 1973. Since then, the lake has developed into an important tourist destination for the greater Leipzig area. In addition to bathing and swimming, Lake Kulkwitz offers a wide range of other sports and leisure activities, including playgrounds, volleyball, table tennis, five-a-side soccer, canoeing, and fishing. The lake is considered a diving paradise. There is a waterskiing facility on the northern embankment.

Lake Kulkwitz in western Leipzig is suitable for a variety of leisure activities. In summer, it's a popular swimming destination, and there's a waterskiing facility on the Miltitz side.

Otherwise, the Kulki, as it's also called, is ideal for hikers and cyclists year-round. A lap around the lake is about ten kilometers long. While it's easily possible to do it with a hybrid bike in summer, mountain biking is recommended in winter, as the forest paths on the Markranstädt side become muddy.

Lake Kulki is easily accessible from several directions: from the west directly from Markranstädt, from the east from Lausen-Grünau and Miltitz, and from the south from the Plagwitz-Pörsten cycle path. Public transport connections are excellent, including trams and buses (lines 1, 61, 161, 62, 65, and 66 on the Leipzig side, and line 65 on the Markranstädt side).

Supermarkets are located nearby in Miltitz and Lausen as well as Markranstädt.
