In order to supply the Bärwalde mine with water, the Spree was relocated several kilometers north-east of Uhyst in the 1970s. The Spree weir was part of this relocation and went into operation in 1982. After more than 30 years of continuous operation, the weir was not only worn out. It also no longer met today's technical requirements. In addition, the resurgent groundwater level in the region made a conversion necessary. Inextricably linked to the Bärwalde opencast mine, the renovated weir was officially inaugurated on May 23, 2017 in the presence of many visitors by the state dam administration. The system now fulfills several functions: As a flap weir, it regulates the water level automatically with the help of two movable flaps. At high tide, the flaps are folded down until the weir is completely open. When erected, however, they create a dam with a height difference of around 3.65 meters between the upper and lower water. This feeds the mill race of the former grinding mill, the miller ponds, the park pond and the swan pond. In addition, the weir regulates the flow of Spree water into the feeder to the Bärwalder See, about one kilometer away. This was created from a residual opencast mine.
