Lourdes is a city in southwest France in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is known all over the world for its Catholic Marian shrines, the so-called "Holy District". Year after year, millions of visitors flock to the Grotto of Massabielle, where, according to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to a young local girl in 1858. Pilgrims can either drink or bathe in the water that gushes from a spring in the grotto.
