Like so many along the River Great Ouse, Fen Drayton Lakes Nature Reserve was formed when former gravel pits were allowed to flood. Fen Drayton's lakes and pools were created in 1992 and today provide a rich habitat for myriad species.

Over 200 bird species have been sighted here, with at least 65 on the list of regular breeders. It's not all about birds though; the lakes and pools are home to otters, whilst dragonflies hunt along the surface.
