In the early days of Berlin, Rauchfangswerder grew with residential areas north and south into a summer house and villa town with a few hundred inhabitants. Last district of the "ferry near" Zeuthen, he came in 1920 with his old parent community Schmöckwitz to the new district of Köpenick and thus to Greater Berlin. Schmöckwitz came into existence in early Slavic times as a lonely fishing village on the Dahme Island between three lakes and soon had several small outdoor living areas. In later German times there were also fishermen's houses on the banks of the Werder, complete with their eponymous smoking chimneys.
