With an area of almost 2 hectares (± 195 ares), a length of 359 meters and the largest width about 80 meters, the triangular market square of Sint-Lievens-Houtem is the largest municipal village in the country.
This typical triangular square, which used to be called 'plaetse' and, depending on the region, was also called 'opstal, colostrum, plein, dries, green, green, hill', was the common cattle pasture of the farmers in days gone by. Some suggest, however, that the triangular construction stems from the three-stroke system and its three coulters (Molenkouter, Sint-Lievenskouter and Hofkouter).
The landowners of the plaetse had the right to plant and graze there. One can imagine how the cowherd blew his horn in the morning, after which all the barn doors that were opened
expenditure on the 'colostrum' opened up and the cattle in the square were let loose. For this reason, all the gates of the farms used to face this common grazing meadow.
The square also used to have two ponds, which functioned as a watering or drinking place and/or fire pit.
Here and there a few old houses from that time are still recognizable among the rapidly advancing new buildings. Yet it is pleasant to stay there and the Saturday market is a lively hit.
