The area of the biosphere reserve extends over 450 square kilometers from the southwestern edge of the Altmark region along the Mittelland Canal to the northwest of Saxony-Anhalt. In addition to the waterways, the landscape is characterized by deciduous forests, meadows, fields, and moors.
