    Border crossings in FL
In 1915–18, the Liechtenstein-Austrian border was protected by military forces on the Austrian side, and a passport was required to enter Austria from Liechtenstein. Border traffic to Switzerland was also severely restricted as a result of the First World War. After Liechtenstein terminated the customs agreement with Austria in 1919, Liechtenstein set up provisional customs offices on the access routes from Austria. This created customs offices in Feldkirch-Tisis, Feldkirch-Hub and Feldkirch-Nofels. According to the Liechtenstein Customs Act of 1921, the movement of goods and people across the Liechtenstein border was restricted at the Landstrasse border crossings near Schaanwald-Tisis, Ruggell-Nofels, Balzers-St. Luzisteig, the Rhine bridges at Bendern, Schaan, Vaduz and Balzers, the post offices and the train stations in Schaanwald, Nendeln and Schaan.
Due to the customs union agreement with Switzerland that came into force on January 1, 1924, the Swiss customs offices and border guard posts in St. Luzisteig, Fläsch, Maienfeld (all GR), Trübbach, Weite, Sevelen, Buchs, Haag and Salez (all SG) were abolished and replaced by secondary customs offices in Ruggell, Mauren (Binza) and Schaanwald, for rail traffic in Schaan (abolished in 1986) and Nendeln. Customs and border guard posts also existed in Schellenberg (no longer occupied since 1987), in Steg (1924–72), in Triesenberg and in Planken. Passengers on trains that do not stop in Liechtenstein are processed in Buchs.
The customs offices were built at Liechtenstein's expense, and their furnishings and maintenance were paid for by Switzerland. They bear the title "Swiss Customs Office in the Principality of Liechtenstein" and bear the coats of arms of both states. During the Second World War and until 1948, Liechtensteiners needed an ID card to cross the Liechtenstein-Swiss border, and foreigners needed a visa. Passport control points existed at this time in Salez, Haag, Buchs, Sevelen and Trübbach (all SG). The border between Liechtenstein and Graubünden was closed, and only Balzner residents with property in this canton were allowed to cross it.
