Originally, the market town of Schrobenhausen was only fortified with wooden palisades. However, Schrobenhausen was almost completely destroyed in 1388 in the town war of 1387–1389. Ducal privileges supported the reconstruction. The Duke of Ingolstadt, Ludwig im Barte, made a special contribution to the expansion and stone town fortifications of Schrobenhausen. From 1392 onwards, the town fortifications were rebuilt and expanded into a ring-shaped fortress with walls, shell towers and double moats. A coat of arms stone from 1414 in the town parish church of St. Jakob commemorates this important date. The town wall, which is still preserved in some places today, with its unique 12 towers, was built by 1440. Built mainly from brick, the walls and towers are now whitewashed.
