The Fockbeker Moor is a characteristic, comparatively young Geest high moor, which has been spreading in a shallow depression for 2,500 years. Large parts of the raised bog peat directly cover the water-retaining mineral subsoil.
Characteristic of such “real-root” raised bogs are the numerous sand hills that are not or no longer covered by peat, on which sandy or moist heaths have spread or typical deciduous forests are growing.
Thanks to intensive efforts, especially voluntary nature conservation, numerous plant and animal communities typical of raised bogs have been preserved or even expanded again, especially in the many manual peat cuttings. The moor and its surrounding area have therefore been under nature protection since 2002 and are part of the Europe-wide network of protected areas NATURA 2000.umweltdaten.landsh.de/nuis/upool/haben/bis_faltblaetter/5817_fockbeker_moor.pdf

The Fockbeker Moor is a 379 hectare nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Fockbek and Hohn in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. It protects a raised bog on the edge of terminal moraines directly to the east. The moor has been greatly changed by drainage and peat removal.
