The town is located below the Celje High Castle (407 m), at the confluence of the Savinja, Ložnica and Voglajna rivers (with its Hudinja tributary) in the lower part of the Savinja Valley. The first urban settlements appeared in the Hallstatt culture period. The city was known in Celtic times as Kelea, when the Celts minted Noricum coins there, and later during the Roman Empire as Civitas Celeia. The settlement obtained municipal rights in 46 AD, with the name of municipium Claudia Celeia, during the reign of Claudius (41 - 54 AD). A Roman road, passing through Celeia, led from Aquileia (Sln. Oglej) to Pannonia. The city is worth a visit.
