In June 2011 the pile dwellings of Öhningen-Wangen were included in the UNESCO World Heritage. They were placed under the special protection of UNESCO and their importance was emphasized.
In the bay east of Wangen there are around 30,000 to 50,000 piles on around 26,000 m² of settlement area. Around 250 m² of this has been examined so far. When the Wangen citizen Kaspar Löhle made the first finds in the bay in 1854, nothing was known about the former culture apart from the finds on Lake Zurich. After Kaspar Löhle had unearthed extensive evidence of the pile dwelling culture in numerous excavations for around 20 years, it took around 100 years until new finds came to light during the construction of a water pipe in 1972 and a little later the state monument office began further research. Today it is known that in the Wangener Bucht there were settlements at different places at different times with interruptions, whose sphere of influence reached far into the Schiener Berg.
