The Mittlere Brücke (common name, but official name Mittlere Rheinbrücke) is Basel's oldest Rhine crossing. It is located at Rhine kilometer 166.6 and is considered the border between the High Rhine and the Upper Rhine.
The first bridge at this location was built in the first half of the 13th century and stood - with modifications - until 1903, when it was replaced by the current bridge.
Until the opening of the Wettstein Bridge in 1879, the Middle Bridge was the only Rhine crossing in Basel.

The Romans already knew the Gotthard, so it was obvious to build a crossing over the Rhine to connect northern Europe with southern Europe, this was done with the middle Rhine bridge.
In the middle of the bridge is the Käppelijoch, where the population says that adulterous women had to pass a test of innocence. An iron chain was tied around their necks and then thrown through a hole in the ground into the Rhine (The Käppelijoch is built on the river side of the bridge). Anyone who could swim to land like this was innocent and free.
