The main castle of Burgau Castle looks back on a turbulent history. The first documented owner was Knight Amilius von Auwe/de Owe. Archaeological excavations in the castle's north wing revealed that it was first built around 1100. The romantic moated castle now presents itself in renewed splendor. Destroyed in 1944, a ruin until 1975, and restored in 1998, Burgau Castle is now the jewel of the city of Düren. Its trademark is the oriel window, erected in 1551 – donated by a happy marriage. It dominates the appearance of the south tower. The outer bailey, built during the French period, is now home to the Niederau local associations and serves as a festival and concert hall for the people of Düren. The castle café is also located here, inviting you to enjoy coffee and cake after a walk in the woods and around the pond of Burgau Castle (eifel.info/a-schloss-burgau-1).
