Fort bij Uithoorn, also known as Fort Amstelhoek, is striking because of the two buildings with lifting turret guns that are connected to the fort via a corridor. Original elements such as wooden partitions and a telegraph room have been preserved. Built in 1911, the fort defended strategic points along the Amstel and a railway.

Today the fort is under development but open for tours and meetings by appointment.

      Military buildings are always interesting.

The Fort bij Uithoorn (Fort Amstelhoek) initially consisted of earthen ramparts, and in 1887 a royal decree authorized the construction of a fortress. This was expanded to include bomb-proof buildings between 1909 and 1911, and an anti-aircraft department was added in 1917. At this point the force consisted of 321 men.

Immediately west of the fort there was an inlet for flooding the land in front of it. To the east of the Ringdijk Tweede Bedijking there is still a small lake, and a fan-shaped pattern can still be seen in the vegetation where the inlet and the riprap bed were.
