The 15th-century Tour du Portalet tower was an important part of the city's former defense system. Originally, Saint-Tropez was a fishing village, which was extended by the Greek to a port. Once the city could only be reached by waterway, so in the 15th century it was decided to build a defensive system towards the sea to protect the city from attacks. This included, among others, the defense tower Tour du Portalet.
