The Scheuergasse goes back to a landgrave's order, which said that no more combustible supplies should be kept within the city walls than people and cattle could "burn" within three days and three nights. This should reduce the risk of fire within the city walls.
The Scheuergasse together with another Scheunenstraße in today's Hohl thus formed the pantry of Zwingenberg. It can be assumed that it was therefore often looted and burned to the ground.
The last devastating fire was in 1832. All the barns on the north side burned down. After the fire, they were rebuilt using rubble stone. The barns on the south side consisted of half-timbered houses until they were renovated.
In 1975 the public thought of what should happen to the historic Scheuergasse. Some of the barns had long since been in disrepair. But it was recognized that the Scheuergasse was unique in terms of urban planning
