The L-shaped Griebnitzsee, which is about 3 kilometers long, borders the Wannsee district to the north and the Babelsberg district in Potsdam to the south. It has connections to the large and small Wannsee, Stölpchensee and Glienicker Lake. The water flows from the Teltow Canal to and from the Havel.
It offers beautiful walking and cycling paths as well as a boat rental with kayaks and canoes.
The border between West Berlin and Brandenburg used to run through the middle of the Griebnitzsee. On the southern bank paths that surround it, some remains of the wall can still be seen. Right next to it is a noble residential area with parks. On the north bank, on the other hand, romantic hiking trails lead walkers or cyclists through dense forest.
The Griebnitzsee is less suitable for swimming due to its mostly poor water quality. Getting into the water from the bank is only possible in some places without any problems. The use of the boat rental offers an alternative.

By the way, there is also a nice shady rest area with a view of the Griebnitzsee.

Just comments on the existing tip: The border did not run between West Berlin and Brandenburg. On the one hand, the state of Brandenburg did not exist at the time, but the Potsdam district was located there, but with a different area, and the border was primarily with the GDR and not specifically with the Potsdam district. On the Polish side, for example, no one thinks Brandenburg begins there, but rather Germany.
The Havel has long been a relatively clean river, far cleaner than the Elbe or Rhine, for example. Absolutely suitable for swimming. It may appear different from time to time due to cloudiness, but this is based exclusively on turbulence caused by ship's propellers and bathers. During the general algae bloom, however, practically all stagnant bodies of water are not recommended, but the Havel is mostly.
