It consisted of four two-story wings grouped around a rectangular inner courtyard. The Archduke's son, Leopold Ludwig, decided in 1855 to have the building adapted as a hunting lodge in the English Gothic style he preferred. After he didn't like the plans of the Viennese architect Franz Schebecie, he commissioned Theophil Hansen to carry out this renovation. Previously, the southern part of the park was redesigned, the stream flowing past was dammed into a pond and the road that previously ran directly past the castle was relocated outside the park.

His brother, Archduke Rainer the Younger, inherited the property. The castle passed from him to his great-nephew Leopold Salvator in 1913 and to his sons Anton, Franz Josef and Carlos in 1931. Towards the end of the Second World War, a direct hit destroyed the roof of the building but caused no damage to the interior. After 1945, Hernstein was the seat of the Russian supreme commander. In 1955, Erste Österreichische Spar-Kasse acquired the already battered facility, but sold it to the Vienna Chamber of Commerce in 1963. After a thorough renovation and draining of the entire complex, the magnificent interior was restored on a large scale.

The Hernstein International Management Institute has been housed in the castle since 1966. To accommodate the seminar guests, a modern hotel building was built in 1976 on the west side of the building, where the stables and carriage sheds were once located. Although it does not fit in at all with the historicist castle, it is hidden by it when you approach it from the park.
