The place was first mentioned in 1369, when Eckehard von Felsberg sold a penny to Surinborg to Hans von Glasewald in Fritzlar. The place was deserted at that time and had obviously been inhabited before. Even in 1393 the place was still desolate, when Archbishop Konrad II of Mainz enfeoffed Kunzmann von Falkenberg with the deserted village of Surburg. Soon after, a farm seems to have existed again: in 1402, the Landgrave's ministerial and bailiff of Lower Hesse, Friedrich von Felsberg, sold his half of the Surenburg estate and court, which had previously been transferred to Hans von Glasewald, to Landgrave Hermann II. from Hesse. The Hersfeld monastery had income in Sauerburg and in 1477 enfeoffed the lords of Falkenberg with tithes in Surenborgk; the Falkenbergs held this enfeoffment until 1606. In 1531 the place was referred to as a court, in 1578 as a court and manorial outwork in the Hessian district of Homberg.

In the 18th century, Sauerburg was a manorial estate on loan according to time rights, and in 1786 it came to Hermann Römer, in whose family it remained until 1915. In 1825 the estate district was combined with the community of Mardorf and later with Mörshausen. In 1835 Sauerburg, which at that time had 23 inhabitants, became a hereditary estate, and in 1848 it became the property of Johann Römer by law.
