The Counts of Tecklenburg initially founded a chapel in Alswede as their own church in the 12th century. This chapel was later replaced by a larger church, the stones of which probably came from the destroyed Mesenburg on the Mesenkopf. The church was in what was then the diocese of Minden.

In 1240 the first Cistercian monastery in the county of Tecklenburg was founded in Leeden. Count Otto I of Tecklenburg and his wife Mechthild transferred St. Andrew's Church to the monastery on August 5, 1240. This also included the right to appoint the church's pastor. In 1295, Count Otto IV of Tecklenburg exchanged the monastery's patronage rights over the church for a farm in Lotte.

Since 1724, the right to appoint the preacher lay with the Prussian king.

In 1819 the rectory could be occupied.

The church was originally a two-aisled late Gothic hall church from the 16th century. It stretched over four bays and was currently closed. The sacristy adjoined to the east. The church interior has cross vaults with ribs and keystones, the eastern bays are covered with ridge vaults. The yokes are separated by pointed arches.
