Strikingly beautiful chapel. People have been making pilgrimages here since the 15th century. Around 1430, a wooden Madonna figure was found in an ash tree. The pilgrimage chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was built at this point and was inaugurated on July 3, 1431 by the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Konrad von Arnsberg.

The name Aengenesch comes from “An der Esche” and only came into being after the chapel was built. Since then, the place has developed into a place of pilgrimage that is particularly popular with people from the surrounding area. Every year around 1000 pilgrims come to the small town of Aengenesch.
