In the course of the 19th century, the Käppele became an increasingly popular pilgrimage destination for pilgrims from near and far. This was by no means the present church, but a predecessor building that was not replaced by the present chapel until 1894. But long before that there was a desire to build a Stations of the Cross along the steep pilgrim path. Thanks to donations, the new Way of the Cross was finally realized and inaugurated in 1880. The Mount of Olives Chapel at the beginning of the Way of the Cross and a third station, also built as a chapel (possibly from an earlier Way of the Cross), are a few years older.

The artistic stone work was done by the Bamberg sculptor Philipp Dorsch, the stones were donations from the quarries in Zeil. Fourteen of the fifteen stations are designed as tabernacle shrines on a light sandstone foundation. The number of the station and its designation are engraved on this base in a round or oval frame. The scenes depicted are modeled as reliefs, often showing the finest details. In front of it is an iron grate. The relief panels are protected by a vaulted sandstone roof, which unfortunately is eroding or breaking more and more at a number of stations (although a general renovation including protective impregnation took place in the 1980s). There is also a stone cross on the roof. The names of the donors are engraved on the sides of each station.

A crucifixion group (consisting of the crucified Christ with Mary and John, each on inscribed bases) that was created in 1864 forms the 12th station. The 13th and 14th stations are located to the left and right of the Käppele main portal. Usually a Way of the Cross consists of 14 Stations, so the "extra" 15th Station (next to the Lourdes Grotto) is quite unusual. Only the first 14 stations are mentioned in the Bavarian monument atlas! Even at the inauguration of the Way of the Cross, only fourteen stations are mentioned. Was the 15th added later?

The way of the cross up to the Zeiler Käppele is quite a tough one.

The Way of the Cross is currently in a completely disastrous state, nobody seems to care about the preservation. See pictures.
