Bryn Y Castell is an Iron Age hillfort to the south of Manod Mawr. It was excavated and partially restored between 1979 and 1985, when a number of significant archeological discoveries were made, such as game boards, glass bangles, stone anvils and several sharpening and polishing stones.

Situated on Sarn Helen, a 160-mile (257 km) Roman road across central Wales, it seems to have been an important site for the production of iron. Two furnaces were discovered here that date back to between 50 BC and 50 AD.
