The Mémorial du Lancaster LL943 is located in the forest on the border between Laplaigne and France. This monument commemorates the seven crew members of a British bomber that was shot down here in July 1944 by a German night fighter. While most of the crew rest in France, tail gunner Henry Simmonds is buried in the cemetery of Laplaigne, after his body was recovered at the time by local resistance fighters. Today, a serene forest path reminds passers-by of this tragic piece of war history.
