Götz gained importance through his scientific work in the field of geography. His doctorate in Tübingen in 1882 was followed by his habilitation at the TH Munich in 1886 and his appointment as honorary professor in 1900. He promoted economic and transport geography and Bavarian regional studies. He was also interested in historical geography. In 1904, the Munich Geographical Society awarded him the silver Prince Ludwig Medal for outstanding efforts in Bavarian regional studies.
