the Pharion sand pits are an abandoned quarry in which many fossils and relics from the Jurassic period have been found. The pieces are exhibited in the Sontheim / Stubental Meteor Crater Museum.

"In the Steinheim Basin you can find calcareous sand mixed with fossil snail shells in several places. The Pharionsche calcareous sand pit is a world-famous Miocene fossil deposit. Above all, the massive occurrence of a small fossil freshwater snail of the species Planorbis multiformis (Gyraulis) is known. With the help of these snails the palaeontologist Franz Hilgendorf was able to provide the first palaeontological evidence for Darwin's theory of evolution in 1866. He recognized a gradual change in shape of the snail shells in the chronological sequence of the lake sediments of the Steinheim Basin."

Before cutting down, it didn't look nice either, but at least not like an insolvent construction site 😅 But maybe there will be a pump track for Steinheim soon bald?
