In the course of the seventeenth century, water pumps came into use to pump up shallow groundwater. This groundwater served as a substitute for the use of river or rainwater. Naturally wells, cisterns and river water continued to be used, but in urban areas more and more communal water pumps were installed. The pumps in Geertruidenberg are connected by lead pipes to the nearby medieval "well water wells".
