Schäfstoss is a hamlet on the eastern edge of the Rothtal, near the B 10.

Presumably, people lived here as early as the Mesolithic, around 5,000 years ago, as can be deduced from excavations in neighboring hills. Later hills date from the Hallstadt period, i.e. the 8th to 5th centuries BC. Chr.

Today's hamlet Schäfstoss probably emerged from an episcopal forester's farm. It was founded in the 11th century. Scholars struggle with the name. Some linguists derive it from the Old High German word "scefa" = sheep = pea and from "push" (= cross border field), so that it could be a "settlement on the pea field". G. Euringer has a different interpretation. He describes a "talking coat of arms" of the von Schefstosses in the Oberschönenfeld monastery as follows: A red-clad female figure with a three-pronged crown kneels in a boat, the ship and water are natural
